Silkscreen on cotton, 2017
This piece was inspired by African Zulu shields and the irregular shapes in Aboriginal patterns. From travelling in India, I picked up a painting of a spirit that was hung outside their houses warding off evil spirits. I always quite liked the idea of an image or object possessing hidden power, and so wanted to make a ‘hanging of protection’.
Starting with the base shapes of the shield patterns, I liked the idea of overlaying circles, like the rings of a tree – with the lines representing the years of available protection.
Silkscreen on cotton, beading, 2017
I came across the stunning shapes of African Throwing Knives and loved their rhythmic beauty despite their brutal purpose. The shapes when arranged together seemed to be in playful dialogue with each other, parodying very human emotion. The black ink on the red fabric seemed to signal revenge and love at the same time.
